Having a career is one of the main goals for majority of the population. Who wouldn't like having a high paying job and a profession they love to do. In order to do so, we need to find that high paying job. One really great outlet is using LinkedIn, the somewhat new and totally awesome social networking site for professionals.

Currently, there are 200 million members and 2.6 million companies that have a LinkedIn page. On top of that, there are two new users joining LinkedIn every second. With such strong numbers like that, you're bound to find a job or connection that can lead to a profession(*). LinkedIn is also in 200 different countries which makes it great for people that want to find a job or internship in a different country, like myself. LinkedIn is a powerful tool for anyone looking for work.

Not only can you search for companies that are looking to hire, but other companies can search for you and browse through your profile to see how well suited you are for their position. This is where I come in and can help you design your LinkedIn page so that it is tailored to attract those recruiters like flies to light.

First and foremost, make your profile picture a professional headshot. I've seen too many profile pictures that have been taken on vacation or partying. Your headshot should consist of your smiling face and a little bit of your shoulders. Nothing too flashy in the background to detract from what you are selling, you!

Second, recruiters search by keywords. So instead of using synonyms of words, be more diverse and specific. If you're having trouble finding the right words, one great way to get over writers block is to look at examples! Look at other people's profiles in your field to get an idea of what a page should look like.

Lastly, make your profile stand out aside from the normal text of who you are and why you're perfect for the professional world. Make a video resume, add links to works you've done and other accomplishments. The more creative it is, the better the chance of a recruiter to notice how awesome your profile is.

I never said tailoring your profile would be easy, it takes days if not weeks to make it perfect. If done properly however, you'll have jobs lined up out the door for you because you learned to market yourself properly.

  3. hi Steve,
I would like to say that your post about LinkedIn is quite insightful. you made a very good case for why people should have a page on that website. One thing that I think you may have forgot is that you can follow companies on LinkedIn, and if they post about any job openings there, you will know about it really fast.

Those tips in the second half of your blog were very spot on. I can tell you from experience hat I get writers block all the time, and being able to look at examples helps clear that up really fast.
